The great escape #4

Mhm the first attempt at pixel bubbles since I've concieved this comic that I genuinly like, they're very RPG-ish.

Don't have much else to add, I think.

I'll be uploading a newspost explaining the current update schedule later today; though here's the gist of what I'll have to tell:

1. I'll most likely be -updating- once a week.

2. I'll be starting on a buffer for intern as well, so I'll try to -produce- a minimum of two pages per week.

3. I might have a small "surprise" of sorts as well, more on this later.

Either way, discuss, post on forums, vote and be gentle.

Peace out.

Aaaaa! Pixels are ok, but please dont do that in a way that your eyes cant go around that text! Make me see the scene first, and then the balloons, please never have the yellow red screaming thick balloons ruin the comic again D:

Nice! I actually like these text bubbles. Gives it a more gamer feel to it.

1799: Lana - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 4:04 AM

Gotta say this might be my new favorite page.

1800: Luffy - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 4:32 AM

I agree 100% with First Comment by mrlollige. I was reading the text before seeing the scene.
Also, Red and yellow text hurts the eyes and Pixels are hard to read.
Everything else...Magnificent!

Readable and in the mood. I like them!
May I suggest using black borders for night/dark rooms scenes?

1803: Chevsky - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 5:34 AM

Ooohh, i like the bubbles. Makes for a quite unified look in total. :D

(Also, MAN, that is a fast acting poison! He was foaming already in the half second it took her to run past him!)

1804: The Gremlin - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 6:32 AM

I liked the old bubbles, myself

1805: Chameon - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 6:57 AM

I like it. It makes me think of Chrono Trigger. I spent many a happy hours on that game.

1806: Daran - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 8:06 AM

To be honest, I really, really liked the old white text bubbles way more. The new ones just jump in my eyes and fill out too much of the scene due to their ... square naure and harsh color.

1807: Kelax - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 8:19 AM

I think they'd look better without the white layer on the outside.

1808: Metacurious - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 8:46 AM

Wait no. I like these. Just make the colors a little more chill, maybe.

This is a PIXEL art comic. If you don't want to look at PIXELS, you're in the wrong place. :U

Maybe try and use those textbox borders for the background etc?

1809: Prime32 - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 8:46 AM

Kind of hard to read, and cover too much of the awesome art on this page.

I'm not sure how to describe it, but with the square corners they seem to "flow" less? The bubbles look like they should be uniform in size and fit into some kind of grid, but since they don't it feels... off.

Maybe if you removed the white trim and added a little transparency?

Love the new pixel bubbles, they really go with the feel of the comic. I see people are saying readability is an issue. While I think they are appealing, it's possible readability could be increased. Regardless, I'm thinking they're overall pretty cool - did you make your own font?

pfff the crazy guy is pretty unpredictable & funny

1811: Bisected - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 9:43 AM

...I like this guy.

Add him to the party Burke!

1812: [fish] - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 11:14 AM

i like the new bubbles but definitely get rid of the white outline. it looks tacky.

1813: Neoskel - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 12:24 PM

What's with that white plus sign in the fourth panel?

I don't mind the new speech bubbles, but i agree with the people calling for the removal of the white borders.

While I can read the text bubbles without problem, I do find they are much bolder than the scene they're on. This is an artistic thing, I don't think it actually harms the comic any. It makes it less scenic, more rpg-ish, than the original system of below-speech. I love the way the word-balloons are customised to the action (I'm looking at the 'Ghlk' especially), they're fun to read. I like the set of the lettering in 'I think he did NOT.', too. I wonder how this all will turn out. I'm so curious.

1815: Metaru - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 12:55 PM

these bubbles would look nice on pannels with short dialogs, but hell they'll use a lot of space on noah's scenes.

by the way, you shouldn't underestimate the power of adding a random page with nonsense from time to time. most of the people visit the site once they get an alert on their newsfeed, and so they are reminded to vote. making a good combo of random interludes and incentives should boost the rankings and also give you some room between proper updates.

1816: PK - Wednesday, October 20 2010 - 5:24 PM

After observing this comic for a while, all I can say is that you're headed in a good direction.

Probably remove the white lines as it already serves as another border. You only need that gold one. Maybe change the background of red to a softer color (like baby blue or a creme color since red is coming off a little harsh on the eyes. But that's just nitpicking.

This is really some quality stuff.

1817: D. Watson - Thursday, October 21 2010 - 12:19 AM

I dunno. I prefer your first two options. Again, these bubbles just stand out too much and block too much.

1818: giovanni - Thursday, October 21 2010 - 1:26 AM

i don't like those, they are hard to read and detract from the scene

1819: Tom - Thursday, October 21 2010 - 1:42 AM

AWESOME! I love this new page. Especially since we get to see Lacey´s personality and shenanigans. I love the guy more and more every day :3

I know that several have said good things on the matter, but I really don´t like the new bubbles. What was wrong with the previous style?

Neo, if you´re really sticking to this speech-bubble style, please for the love of God change the font, it´s hard to read. Oh, and the white borders, too, pretty please.

It is Sparkle ^_^

1821: JACellist - Friday, October 22 2010 - 2:59 AM

The bubbles really take away from the art. It has a lot to do with the bright red color and the thick gold outline.

1824: Sandra - Friday, October 22 2010 - 11:00 PM

Yes!! The flat white bubbles have always bothered me, they clash so much with the gorgeous pixel art. Loving the new bubbles!!

1832: Le Pison~ - Monday, October 25 2010 - 11:48 AM

I'll admit, I really like the bubbles and hope you keep them... but I'll have to agree with some people that the colours are far too bold, even if it does match the comment boxes below the comic >_>. Also, the lettering is a little difficult to read at first, such as the tiny "G"s the Captain is sputtering near the end. They look like C's when they're that small xD
