Actually I don't think that defies physics. It does defy biology (nothing is *that* strong), but not physics.

The only thing about throwing yourself is a lack of an object to pull from, but if you turn it into a pushing motion, you've got plenty to push off from. Functionally, burktossing a log isn't any different from him just jumping - he's pushing off from the shore either way to provide the force.

Further proof that Burk is the best character in this comic, far better than Noah.
