That IOU is a strangely kind gesture even from someone like Burk considering he was just attacked, but this also makes me wonder, was the card what blocked the attack, or Burk's natural toughness, or something else?

@Otter Claw: The attack looks to have been blocked through the combined efforts of Burk and Evyle. Evyle is an esper, and Burk is almost certainly one too.

Burk knows a lot about ghouls. In Tobi's story we are told by Shalila (I think) ghouls just randomly attack everyone. But Burk is aware of their love of chaos, and even that they have some kind of radar that allows them to determine how important someone is in the grander scheme of things.
