@Tom: Well, with a name like *that*... perhaps it's too obvious though? In terms of "student most likely to attempt to stuff Windows in the nearest locker", the Malhartians appear to be baring a grudge.
He's a bit too cavalier considering the situation he and all the students are in. This 'is' about turning them into something useful to the empire. Being nothing but a problem might get him cut.
That said, I think he wisely chose not to share his magic. I have a feeling their first assignment is going to pit them against one another in some light espionage and having your magic secret might be beneficial.
