Lingering doubts.

Absolutely no underlying trauma related to that.

Just the other day I saw an interview with a woman who was born and raised in Israel. Her dad used to take the family to a beach, a really nice place, and she had quite a few fond family memories of that place... But then one day she saw a documentary in which war veterans talked about their actions during the nakba, and her dad was one of the interviewees... He was interviewed at a beach -- THAT beach, and the things he bragged about that he and his war buddies had done on that beach, the mass-grave of Palestinians they had buried there... It ruined all of those good memories, and completely changed her relationship with her dad... Like, how could he even have taken them there, to the scene of his crimes against humanity, to enjoy happy times with his family?
She and her own family eventually moved away from Israel, she just couldn't stomach it any longer, and when she told her mom and dad that they were leaving, her dad had thrown a tantrum, shouting accusations at her along the lines of "After all I sacrificed so that we could live here, is THIS the gratitude I get?!"

It was an interesting interview... especially when juxtaposed against the reports of all the IOF soldiers who are now committing suicide in droves, unable to live with themselves after what they've done to innocent people... and it's all gotten me thinking about war veterans... Like, the classic romanticised image of grandchildren gathering around grandpa, asking him to regale them with his stories from the war... How many of those grandparents actually enjoyed telling the kids those stories? How many of them were as remorseless as that woman's dad? And how many of them were more like the soldiers who are killing themselves right now? How many of them were again and again asked by their grandkids to relive events that they would sooner rather just forget?

@noname - I don't think I'm alone when I say I would SINCERELY APPRECIATE IT if you keep those kinds of stories out of this comic page.

They're very dark and political, and have little to no relation to the comic.

Thank you.

Held remembers what happened last time she went on a field trip to some mountains

@Tom
I do think this is actually quite relevant to the current page. And Theobald's tale isn't exactly fluffy clouds and apolitical rainbows either.

Theobold trying to comfort Held is adorable.

@Tom dunno if you're alone but I think it was very interesting, and relevant. Feels like the word "political" has become a buzzword at this point.

48092: Gorzag - Thursday, August 21 2025 - 8:45 AM

@Tom: I agree with Some guy, noname's rant was both relevant and interesting.

Also, what does "political" even mean in this context? How is the magic users genocide depicted in this comic less "political" than real life ones?

48093: Author's Note - Thursday, August 21 2025 - 8:56 AM

@All

Normally I don't let "don't post this"-type comments go through as they don't add anything constructive, but I am a bit of two minds here.

I appreciated Noname's contribution and found it relevant, but I can imagine that when referencing real life atrocities in such detail that something like a soft trigger warning before the post might be better.

I do have a bit of a soft ban on irrelevant political tangents, but this felt clearly tied into the narrative, so no issues there.

@Noname

That sounds like a really interesting interview! Is there a title or something that could serve as a reference for looking it up?

48095: Brownie24128 - Thursday, August 21 2025 - 11:14 AM

Well, if we are allowed to get philosophical as long as it stays on topic...
@Noname I do not think it is so severe for Theobold. He has great strength and a robust moral compass, he would not do anything truly terrible. His biggest regret seems to be what happened to his sons.

Also, that veteran from the interview reminds me of Helds biological father, who killed countless magical children while sparing his own. I think questions such as guilt just fall flat for some people, but precisely because of that I really look forward to what conflict Theobold and his brother might have next in the story.

TIL the comic with multiple named kings, anarchist islands and state sanctioned hero cops who cover up executive corruption and nuclear bombs, as well as horrifying nightmare deaths and hyper capitalist exploitation is apolitical and not dark

Also those trees on the mountain just need a little one to grow in between them to make a perfect nuclear symbol

@Tom
Really? You don't see how the comic (and Neo's commentary) would've reminded me of that interview?
Also, as many people here have already said: not sure taking issue with my comment being political and dark holds up in this case...

@Neo
In hindsight, yeah, I definitely should've put a trigger warning at the top of that comment. Apologies for that. v__v

@Brownie
True, Theobold seems like the kinda guy who'd strongly refrain from crossing the moral event horizon. But that doesn't mean he hasn't seen and experienced things that will haunt him. (His sons being one example.)
