Random question of the day: Favourite Trope
Sup guys, another question for the readers, just cause I'm curious;
What are your favourite and least favourite tropes ? And why?
Tell me all about it!
(For those who don't know what tropes are ..uhh, tvtropes.org <-)
That is all for now.
Also, I can't seem to get on deviantart, this makes me sad. :(
Peace out!
My favorite trope? Ladies and gentlemen, I present... The Magnificent Bastard: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagnificentBastard
Why? Because they're magnificent bastards, that why. Whether you like 'em or not, you still have to admire 'em.
My least favorite? That's a bit tougher. I guess Mary Sue, just because people argue over the definition all the goddamn time.
I Need To Go Iron My Dog. Just because it's made of so much win.
Of course, there's also the trope page for A Path To Greater Good, but that one is not a trope in and of itself.
Least favorite... probably Plot Tumor, especially of the Romantic variety.
I might have said Patchwork Kids, but I find the sheer absurdity of that one to be So Bad It's Good.
Favorite trope? Tough. There's easily ten I can think of. But if I REALLY had to nominate one...
Big Effin' Sword. Yeah :3
Least favorite? Tough, too, since I like most of 'em. But if I REALLY had to nomintate one...
Gainax Ending. Yeah >_<
Least Favorite Trope: Amnesia. I'll admit that it has the /possibility/ to be done right, but so much more often it's just an example of bad storytelling.
Favorite Trope: Deconstruction. I'm always nit picking at media these days, so it's nice to see some Authors doing it too.
I like tvtropes, but I don't like their naming conventions. I dunno man. I feel like you're asking "What kind of recipes do you like?"
I guess any trope is good if it makes a character, especially a villain, more interesting. I'm fond of Pet the Dog moments and Friendly Enemies. Telling me what the bad guy won't do is an important way of humanizing them.
The fastest way to make me go away forever is when characters fall for repeated betrayals of trust from the same antagonist. It ruins both characters. The protagonist comes across as too stupid to respect, and the antagonist is made to look one dimensional and incapable of reciprocating mercy. I dunno if there's a trope name for that.
tvtropes...a bane of my existence.
its so hooking that i spend whole days (when i can) reading it.
it was so bad that i had to tinker with the internet files to make sure that i could never access tvtropes anymore
@giovanni - I know EXACTLY what you mean. It all starts with one tiny, innocent trope. And then you click on a link to a related trope. And then another. And another.
Before you know it you spent the whole day reading tropes. That's all o_O
My favorite trope: LAMPSHADING. The anti-climax to jokes is the perfect climax.
Second favorite: Breaking the fourth wall... if it's done well.
My least favorite: Everyone's Jesus in Purgatory.
Favourite : Chekhov's gun
Least favourite : tear jerker
But as it's been already said, there would be so many to cite for both...
My favourite trope would probably be It Amused Me, since I can so readily identify with it.
The Good Guy Always Wins gets on my nerves most, because unless the villain crosses the Morale Event Horizon Twice, I tend to have a soft spot for the evil.
Heroes have to be more then just a good person thrust into the path of adventure for me to root for them.
(And you've done a fantastic job of avoiding that particular set-up.)
I was interested in transformation tropes because some high quality stories had used it effectively.
I dislike... What was it... Nightmare fuel...
