Mildly Informative Post

Yo!

I've been thinking for a long time what to post here, the only real reason is because I didn't want to prematurely say anything I'd completely change my mind on a short while later.

I'll get straight to the point, because this is probably what you all want to know:

Am I quitting the comic?

I'd answer with a simple yes or no as that'd be the most direct answer, but truth to be told, if the answer was anything that simple I would've given it to you all 2-3 months ago.

I'll be perfectly honest, the comic, in it's current format, is dead to me.

But at the same time I love doing comics and I love a large part of the characters & the underlying story.

Now I'll explain what's going on:

Truth to be told, I've had desires to quit my comic at least 7 times during the course of it's life because of unresolvable problems with art, plot or related issues.

Most of you probably saw these moments as "just another art change", but truthfully, this wasn't just me experimenting just for the fun of it, it almost always had to do with a big problem.

I'll be completely honest in saying that as things are now, I have almost no motivation to continue with my story as is, it's been stressful and fairly unenjoyable for me at too many moments, and the plotline I've set out really wouldn't go anywhere interesting for years.

------------------------------------------------------

Either way, the important part is obviously, what happens next?

I've been working on new material all the while that I haven't updated my comic (barring 1 week due to sickness & a second week due to my computer being busted -_-) to get an idea of what sort of art style I'm comfortable with without the pressure of having to update soon making me pick a bad/problematic style just so I can get new pages out sooner.

I've also reconsidered a few important things related to the plot & actual stories.

Namely:

1. can I actually manage to update 3 seperate stories at the same time without it negatively affecting the progression of all 3 in a bad way.

2. what are the most effective ways to tell the seperate stories in a way that lead to more enjoyable individual pages.

As things stand now if I continue my comic it'll be under a few conditions, and most importantly, it will almost be guaranteed to be a complete reset of some sort, because I can't possibly enjoy going on with what I have now.

One condition has been largely met already, namely, I've figured out a style for the sprites & characters that I enjoy super much, and I feel that after working with it quietly for months, it's possibly the first style that works in every possible situation I'd want to use them for.

A few conditions that I'm still trying to master are:

1. I want to be able to make decent combat scenes that aren't a confusing mess.

I've found 1 or 2 methods to portray stuff like punches, attacks in a clear manner so far, but honestly, almost any time a lot of action happened in the comic, in more than half the cases it became hard as hell to tell what was going on, this actively made me avoid making battle scenes too elaborate or intense, as I simply wasn't capable of doing it justice.

For the type of story I want to tell I actually have to learn how to handle this in a satisfying way.

2. I want to learn how to make clean, interesting & easy to produce backgrounds.

This partly goes hand in hand with the combat point, but during the creation of my comic backgrounds often fell in two camps. "awesome but way too time consuming" or "okay but filled with perspective mistakes".

This isn't because I don't know perspective, but because to produce decent backgrounds at a good enough speed to updated several times a week, I had to let things lie left and right just to get them done in time.

If there was a critical mistake or some perspective problem simply to get it out easier, I didn't have the time to redo the entire thing, because without the background I couldn't start on any other part of my page.

If I find a decent method to quickly make impressive backgrounds with minimal or no glaring errors, this alone will increase my capacity to properly update my comic in the quality I desire.

3. I've been restructuring the plot so I can emphasize a few important base points that really fell flat during my comic's first run.

I love doing fun stuff, I love working with things like crazy animals, weird adventures and strong but short bursts of story, yet I ended up doing almost exactly the opposite in how I handled the actual execution of my story.

I won't reveal too much related to plot issues, but this is an important point I need to figure out before I continue.

Now I'm sure a lot of you are wondering "okay so what does this mean ? you're quitting and might come back some day?", which is a method other authors have sometimes suggested/relied on in the past, and in my experience it's very questionable, as a lot of them just flat out don't return.

At the same time I really feel like I can't continue with my story as_is for the simple reason that this summer I've finally gotten to the point where I lost nearly all interest.

------------------------------------------------

I do have a suggestion for the comic/site that doesn't revolve around "just be patient and some day I might return"

namely: I can't bloody practice to make my comic better, unless I make actual comics; so to me it seems almost entirely pointless to just stop producing anything until I'm "ready", that just won't work.

I'd like to make a lot of practice comics to test out ideas, without the constraints of having my past plot and comics weight down my ambition and creativity.

For this reason I want to use the website to post a lot of practice pages about whatever I feel like that are largely disconnected from what I've made before.

To put it simply, I want to focus on stuff like single page gag strips, short adventures and short stories that are all over the place in content and "setting" to give me a much better idea of what problems I do and don't have.

Most of these will probably star familiar characters, though as I mentioned, it just won't be connected to the previous pages, as they'll be purely for personal practice.

Either way, apologies for the long post, as your reward for going through it all, here's a little picture to provide an example of sorts of the things I've been working on in private:

Example

Either way, I'll probably post some more in the future, if any of you have questions I'll answer them in my next newspost (or in comments, whatever)

Talk to you guys later!

(By the way, I approve all of your comments personally, so whoever pretended to be me to say the comic was dead, shame on you, I totally saw that.)

Don't worry, You are still an amazing artist!

I would not mind short stories from you, but also I am eager to know how the current stories end.

Whatever you did, I personally only noticed one problem, which was 3 story lines. I never had much trouble with styles or action scenes or whatever. Of course, there is always a better way, but browsing back to older comics you've come a long long way, while I loved them from the start! Keep it up, and don't do things that don't interest you!

*thumbs up* You raise good points. Further, you produce great things. Please have fun while doing great things.

A reset. You have my permission, I love the new style.

I was the one saying it was dead. People were starting to get annoying with the complaints.

As much as I wish to know how it all ends, I'm prepared to wait.
We all love what you do, but if you don't love doing it, then it's fine if you stop for awhile.
I'll consider the comic officially "In a coma", and will enjoy whatever shorts you grace us with as part of your personal practice.

Regardless, your performance so far has been excellent, especially compared across the board against other comics online. If you keep improving, eventually you'll reach a perfect state. And everyone will say "Praise Neorice, for he has created perfection."

What I have to say is this:

Dont force yourself, Im running my own comic and im in a simmilar situation, but to a lesser extent.

Your art is genious, period, it was great before and its become epic now.

If you ever do drop the comic, please atleast let us see what would of happened, under the assumption you had it all planned out, Im not saying make pages for it, maybe just make a few news posts every once in a while telling the rest of the plot.

Its just that when people just drop somthing all togeather, it tends to anger people because they want to know what happens next.

As for A Path To Greater Good, Youve got a great fanbase, for the most part (Except for a few trolls that come around to whine because they have no life....lol), and I dont think people would put it against you if you didnt continue the comic, but it would be great if you did.

Also, no matter what, your better then most people as it is. Definitly better then me, my sprite art isnt even art sadly...

One more comment to make is that you may want to do a collaberation, though only a short one, to keep stress down. It will let you learn things that you cant do on your own. And if you ignore everything else in this post, remember this:

Your epic, your art imperfections are what make it a comic, If the art was perfect, I think people wouldnt read this comic for the plot, which you put a ton of work into in the first place, three at once....

Good day, or night, (Stuipd timezones....) And Great work no matter what your choice!

@Incuro:

Just for clarity, I'm not doing this out of some desire to get to "perfection", I'm doing this because as the comic is now, I don't particularly enjoy the creation of it.

I don't just want to improve my art, I want to streamline it so it best coincides with what I enjoy doing.

2979: Jetrel - Tuesday, October 18 2011 - 6:57 PM

I think your plan is doomed, because no matter what it is, you're always going to get tired of it. There's no magic style out there you'll always enjoy. The honeymoon will always end.

If you can't motivate yourself to successfully do long-form work, don't try. You've got cool ingredients, but you don't need to put these in some giant, epic, monolithic story. It's totally okay to do stuff as a collection of short stories, small works, etc.

@Neoriceisgood:

Ermm, sorry, the internet always kills what im trying to say, this isnt the first time this has happened.

Basicly im saying your epic, and your only getting better.

You should only focus on what you want to do and youll be better off then most comic makers.

I tried to use the Perfection thing as an example, but now that I look back at it, it doesnt even compare to what I was trying to say.....

Also I forgot exactly what I was trying to say while typing it.... So its a dual fail on my part.

Basicly I was trying to motivate, but I failed. Go Me! (Sarcasim)

Hey, do what you have to do. I'll keep checking the site and seeing what you're working on, regardless.

I do want to know where the currently-in-limbo storylines were going to go, though...

2984: Freako - Tuesday, October 18 2011 - 9:34 PM

I'll keep reading as long as you haven't given up completely. I'm sure that, however long it takes, the reset will end up being better in the long run, both for us and for you.

Good luck!

Dude, neo, its been a while. I really respect your decision, both because you chose for yourself and because i agree with your reasons.

I love your comics. Near the end of this one i had a hard time following the plot - too many tangents, piles of unnecesary incognitas. But hey, im sure your more or less selfaware of this, and will improve on it.

Heres to the rebirth of awesomeness!

I"ll be waiting on my end for ya :D

2989: giovanni - Wednesday, October 19 2011 - 7:33 AM

a reset? why not!

if you can enjoy it it will be better

2994: Zeratanus - Saturday, October 22 2011 - 11:38 PM

sucks to know these stories will be either stopped or reset, but I can understand writing yourself into a corner sucks. That and I never understood how you could do so many backgrounds anyway. They're a big enough pain in a regular comic. Doing them in pixels would drive me absolutely bonkers!

But anyway, I love your art as much as the comic, so I'll keep on meandering by to see whatever pops up.

Cheers! And I hope you find that spark again soon!

Sounds good. Just put the comic on hold until you can continue it.
I have to agree that the comic has gotten complex as of late due to captured prisoners, a captured king, an evasive female theif, the new king and his royal servants and a curious detective.
On Noah end, there's also plenty of characters, on Tobi's side, there's a shitload of characters, so much so that it feels like the story of the Red Mind, not the story of Tobi.

Art-wise, I find this comic to be pretty good. Story Wise, I found it to be originally good, but nowadays, somewhat messy.
All of these characters introduces new viewpoints which in itself would look awkward if dropped. They increase the complexity of the story and makes it messy.

Technically speaking, if you're planning on reset-ing, I'd say this. There's no need to repair what already work. I got time to spare and even more ideas, so if you wish for help.

Well, it beats no comics at all. Do as you will, and I'll keep reading. :)
