What do you like most about HoH?

Yo!

If you're reading my comic I assume you must find it enjoyable or interesting on some level!

I'd actually be curious to know if there's any particular elements that draw any of you in/keep you reading.

Kind regards & for those who missed it: 5 updates again next week.

I really like the aesthetic style you work in, and there's clearly more to see, so that's one element. I find the major characters interesting too (although I didn't take an instant shine to Noah, like I did with the others, I'm now interested enough to see how he develops from this point on). Beyond that, I just want to see how this story plays out - I'm liking the setup for whatever action follows, and am waiting for that to happen, so I'll inevitably be here to see it when it does. I guess you could say I'm hooked.

Oh, where to begin?

- The sprite art. Like, seriously Neo, I've seen all the levels of detail you can pull off with this stuff, and you never cease to impress.

I'll admit that I wish that you would return to your super high quality stuff from the last comic :)

- The story lines + characters. I've only seen fresh stuff from you, no cliches, and most of everything has a cool twist to it. The character concepts (personality wise) are great, and you never seem to run out of them.

@Tom

While I understand the super high quality art was a draw, it had a couple of massive issues. Honestly the most glaring one being that I had to significantly cut down in stuff like background variation & update frequency.

For reference: in march 2011 when I had the fancy style I uploaded 14-15 pages in a single month. At that time I posted pages as I produced them.

In januari of 2015 I produced 60 pages. Now if you add in the fact that I often took several month hiatuses to produce the necessary art for aptGG .. that's a ridiculous difference.

Another big reason for the simpler art for characters is honestly ... I have some pretty big stuff planned for the future, a simpler base style gives me more of an opportunity to go all out when it's required within the narrative without killing my buffer in the process.

The humor is just what I like -- unexpected outcomes that make you laugh, sarcasm, and not just a bunch of cheap junk to keep people interested. That's hard to find in anything these days. It's so different from most other comics you see -- a very impacting feature!

The characters are plentiful and unique. Burk is an absolute doll and very unlike the typical hero. :3

The art is fantastic. It's simple, yet still pleasing to stare at.

You're such an inspiration to those of us that have a passion pixel art. Sprite comics have a reputation for being really bad and I'm sure it's not easy to gain a decent audience because of the stigmas. They can easily be overlooked. But HOH fulfills the elements needed to stand out, in my opinion. Keep doing what you're doing, Neo, and work at a pace that's right for you!

- Aesthetic-wise, your art is appealing and consistent.

- Plot-wise, you convey an adventure with multiple interweaving threads. Plus there seems to be a perpetual upredictability where I'm just as unsure of what will happen next as the characters are.

- Character-wise, your character's are distinct and interesting. Plus the humor you manage to pack in the strips is quite enjoyable.

- Personally, the thing I appreciate most is your frequent update schedule. I've got a lot of comics on my RSS feed, and nothing seems to kill my interest in a comic more than a molasses-like update schedule. I understand that creating anything always has its difficulties and it's easy to forget how much work goes into creating media, but as a consumer I definitely appreciate when a content-creator is able to figure out a way to make frequent updates.

5970: JailedCinder - Sunday, February 1 2015 - 3:39 PM

I can't really think of anything else to say that hasn't already been said.

As it is though, personally, as much as the art, humor, and frequent updates are definitely appealing to me, above all, I'd say I am most drawn in by how unique the characters are with the kind of choices they make along with their little quirks and how the story develops because of those choices and quirks.

I'm just waiting to see Tobi beat stuff up with science, then beat stuff up through sheer orneriness, then beat stuff up with ornery science.

Art Style's lovely, either Super High Qual or normal. You update frequently, and the stories and characters are fun.

Also, I have a soft spot for sprite comics with 100% custom sprites. Not really enough of them.

The art style was what attracted me to PttGG in the first place (well done sprite comics with original artwork are pretty rare).

The world it's set in also has me interested. I'm a sucker for good worldbuilding (the urge to write what's been revealed down's what drove me to start the TV Tropes page).

Burk.

5980: whitemanPT - Monday, February 2 2015 - 4:46 AM

never one thing its the art the story the characters as long as it dosent get tooo complycated like ptagg and this is just my opinion but the art now beter than the old one

5981: Silly Name - Monday, February 2 2015 - 6:12 AM

The Emperor's Hair.

Well, there's also the story, which keeps me coming back every day, multiple times a day to check for things I might have missed. I spend an unhealthy period of time pondering over what will happen next in the comic and how the stories of Burk and Noah (and the other character whose name I can't recall) will interact with each other.

But nothing will ever beat the Emperor's Hair.

5988: Zeratanus - Monday, February 2 2015 - 5:52 PM

Burk's skivvies.

Also because the last comic was awesome and with this one you've made Noah's bit of it insanely better. Burk's was already full of Burk so I mean both versions of his are awesome. Looking forward to see Tobi's. And I'm just praying that at some point in the comic I get to see her weaponize scissors again~

The art style is great! I think it might be one of the few spritecomics out there with its own sprite set of any commendable quality, and calling it of simply commendable quality doesn't do it justice! This rivals even the most well drawn of traditionally drawn comics!

Your characters are great! They've got adorable personalities and designs!

The story is very interesting! I followed PttGG, and I've been waiting patiently for you to catch up with its progress so I can see where you were planning to take this. Also, as said, HoH is quite unpredictable! And I'd also like to add, it manages that without being nonsensical, which makes its unpredictability a major strength.

Also, I like Elf Bro. Elf Bro is the most bro of elves.

The world building is very well done! There's a good sense of there always being more to the world thus far.

I would like to complain that Noah lost a lot of his charm. Though that being said, with all the charm he had in PttGG, it didn't seem like he had much room for character development, so maybe this way is better? His support cast is definitely entertaining.

And all in all, I just like it because its itself. It doesn't play to any cliche story formula, but still has its own developing logic and sense that captivate the audience.

Also, have you considered making a HoH videogame? If you do, then I will give you all the money ever.

5990: Neoriceisgood - Monday, February 2 2015 - 11:18 PM

@Stheno

Yeah a lot of the major changes to Noah were intentional, I honestly realised I wasn't just writing myself in a bit of a corner with him in aptGG ... but his personality/behavior really didn't make sense for such a young character.

In the larger narrative Noah, Burk and Tobi are very different kinds of protagonists in ways that might not always be obvious. (It goes a *lot* deeper than "the strong one", "The smart one", "the girl (lol)")

Because I restarted my webcomic I've had *a lot* more time to plan out the story over a longer period, which helped me change some major elements, especially for Noah.

Hi Neorice,

I've been reading since... oh man. 2009? APTGG? Things I like about this comic
-Incredible detail to pixel art AND an original style. I could probably recognize your pixel art as readily as I could recognize the art from SQUIDI - there aren't many original pixel comics out there of high quality, most use stolen art.
-Regular updates
-Outlandish characters and situations
-No spoon-feeding the readers with information, we're left just enough in the dark of everything.
-Reader interaction, back when I was on facebook, we had connected briefly

Hi Neo!

So I just realized this blogpost was here :)

Here's what I think of HoH:
- The art is awesome! As many before me said, your style is great, the characters look cool and the backgrounds are in pair with them. And it's pixelart!
- You are a drawing machine. Keep the updates flowing! You have great control & regulation over them, and that's something important (and nice).
- The story and the characters feel fresh (at least mostly, I can't think of exceptions right now anyway) and you manage to surprise the reader with almost every page, but (as they've also said before) in a good way (not a total WTF, just something we didn't think of, which is great). I'm always curious to see what will happen next and how will the three (at least they were three in aptGG) stories will connect or so.

So overall, everything! Keep it up, I'm excited to see where it is going.

Some things I like compared to aptGG:
- The consistency in the art style. AptGG looked great as well, but I pefer the more consolidated style you use/have now; everything seems to fit much better and I don't feel like the loss in details in *some* parts is bad at all (I think there's still a lot of detail! (Not a bad thing!)).
- The new Noah personality/plot is better than the one in aptGG: as you say above, I think that personality was more fit for a more adult character; it felt as if he had suddenly gained super-mental abilities or something. I also like the new "cast" to go with him.

Some other stuff!:
- As Stheno said, if at some point in time you/someone were to make a game of HoH, please do tell us if you want our money ;D
(Even if it's just one of those light novel/make-choices games, I think that'd be pretty cool already. Otherwise make Burk Hero Brawler!)
- Any merch anywhere, anytime?
